Project S-16: Transimission fluid change

It's never too late to write down my project on the S2000.

It was last year, 2016's Christmas Eve that I did the transmission fluid change.

I don't know the condition of the fluid. There is a simple way to check if the fluid is good. Unscrew the fill bolt and see if the level is high enough and close to the fill hole. Also use a light to check if the fluid is in good shape. Any contaminant or leaf or brick could be a sign of change.

What you need for the job is:
(1) Transmission fluid you prefer, 2 qtz you need to buy. (1.7 qtz needed for the change though)
(2) The 3/8 ratchet
(3) The 3/8 torque wrench
(4) Two new washers 14mm and 20mm, parts no. 94109-14000, 94109-20000, one for the fill bolt, one for the drain bolt. As usual, the replacement is recommended. However, do remember to face the sharp side of the washer towards the transmission (car).
(5) Lube pump. You need this to pump the fluid into the transmission bay.

I mentioned 3/8 drive here because all the bolts you needed to unscrew were either 3/8 drive hole or small one which meant a smaller drive torque wrench would be way more accurate. If you were using the 1/2 drive torque wrench, it would be definitely inaccurate.

Steps for doing the transmission fluid change:
(1) Lift the car off the ground. Keep it level so that the old fluid could drain.
(2) Unscrew the fill bolt with a ratchet.
(3) Unscrew the drain bolt to let the old fluid drain.
(4) When it's almost done use the pump to pump some new fluid into the bay to flush all old one out. Only 4~5 pumps would be good. You have more than enough fluid for the change remember.
(5) When it drips replace the washers.
(6) Put the drain plug back on the transmission. Torque it to the correct specs. Now it's time to pump 1.7 qtz of fresh fluid into the transmission.
(7) When the fluid you just pumped keeps coming out, stop pumping the fluid and put the fill plug on. Torque it to the factory recommended specs with the torque wrench.
(8) Clean up the mess and dispose of the old and rest of the new fluid.
(9) Go for a test drive to make sure everything works fine, no weird noise, no vibration from transmission, etc.

I didn't feel much of a difference. And I could see that the old fluid was not that bad. I am now using the Amsoil Synchromesh. It is highly rated as the Honda MTF.

This is even easier than the brake fluid change I think. So why not give it a shot when you can do something and learn something at the same time?
