Autocross 1: MetroNY PCA 3/19/17
This was the first 2017 event! Other clubs like NNJR SCCA and FCSCC events were all cancelled but glad that PCA of MetroNY was still doing the event! (This was my 5th event so far, last year I did four.)
The setup I had on the car was:
- Tires: Nankang NS-20 (fronts are fine, rears are almost done)
- Camber: -2.6 front, -2.0 rear
- Stock rear sway bar
And it was freezing cold that day, especially in the morning, 0 degrees!
This resulted in a lot of sideways at my first two runs. Even if I didn't hit gas, due to my rear sway bar, big front camber and cold, the rear end just slided out quite often. You could check this out:
Autocross MetroNY_PCA_031917_Run1&2 (Slippery runs)
When it was noon I did better cuz the car just listened to me more.
Autocross MetroNY_PCA_031917_Run9&10 (better and fastest run #10)
Though this was just a warm-up and the weather was so cold, I could still some of my mistakes:
1. Snap oversteer (it was cold though!): https://youtu.be/oCYdxZaFiaU?t=33s. I didn't even expect that. I just slightly let off the gas and steered a bit more. And it was cold, my first run. I was reacting way too late when it started to oversteer, almost 1s late. And my second countersteer was way too late either! Like 1.5s late.
2. I was not looking ahead: https://youtu.be/oCYdxZaFiaU?t=1m9s.
3. Sudden pressing gas pedal resulted in oversteer (because it was cold again): https://youtu.be/oCYdxZaFiaU?t=2m8s. However, even if that happened, I should have reacted earlier. 1s late.
4. I was late countering again at 2:15: https://youtu.be/oCYdxZaFiaU?t=2m15s
5. At run 9 I did a correct for oversteer much better: https://youtu.be/g0oPerVyOL8?t=38s. Still could be 0.3~0.4 seconds faster though!
6. After the first two scary runs I was scared so I didn't get on gas early for almost all following runs.
7. I did the slaloms at the beginning way too slow. Should have been more aggresive (smoothly).
8. I knew that I should turn in earlier but still not enough.
In short, I did learn something:
- Cold is the enemy. When running in cold weather or on cold tires at the beginning, be extra careful on oversteer.
- Be quick in countersteering! Quick!
- Turn in early
- Should be more aggresive! With smoothness.
